Mama India bistrot
This small bistrot was designed with a clear intention from the client: to avoid the stereotypical visual language often associated with Indian restaurants. Instead of ornate decorations, intense colors, and traditional motifs, the concept focuses on creating a fresh, contemporary atmosphere inspired by nature and subtle cultural references.
Located in a vaulted historic space, the interior takes advantage of the existing architecture. The white curved ceilings and niches create a calm, almost gallery-like background that allows the materials and lighting to define the character of the space.
The design palette is built around deep green tones, warm wood textures, and soft lighting, evoking a lush, tropical ambiance without becoming literal. Upholstered seating and chairs in emerald velvet introduce richness and comfort, while black metal tables and minimalist furniture maintain a modern and clean aesthetic.
A continuous bench along the wall maximizes seating in the narrow space, creating an intimate rhythm of small tables suitable for casual dining. On the opposite side, a simple bar counter offers additional seating and reinforces the bistrot character of the venue.
Plants play an essential role in the atmosphere. Integrated wall boxes, shelving niches, and hanging greenery introduce organic softness and subtly reference tropical landscapes associated with the cuisine, without relying on direct cultural clichés.
Lighting is designed as a playful focal element. A custom chandelier made of natural rope and warm filament bulbs introduces handcrafted warmth, while decorative lamps – including the sculptural monkey holding a bulb – add personality and a touch of humor.
Behind the counter, large botanical graphics and layered shelving create depth and visual interest, reinforcing the connection between nature, texture, and contemporary dining culture.
The result is a modern Indian bistrot that feels relaxed, welcoming, and distinctive, where the identity of the cuisine is expressed through atmosphere rather than through predictable decorative themes.
