Apartment S

This project is a creative transformation of a rental apartment in Ljubljana, completed with an extremely limited budget and minimal permanent interventions. Because the apartment could not be structurally altered, the design strategy focused on reversible solutions, color, and small handcrafted details that dramatically changed the atmosphere of the space.

Rather than replacing existing elements, the renovation celebrates what was already there. The living room is centered around a striking red sofa, which became the starting point for the color palette. A blue-grey wall behind it enhances the sofa through color contrast, while a botanical textile and hand-painted artwork introduce texture and depth. This approach demonstrates how thoughtful color composition can completely redefine a room without expensive construction.

Throughout the apartment, simple yet expressive design gestures create character. Hand-painted arches, warm earthy tones, and small DIY details add personality to otherwise neutral walls. Existing furniture was restored or repurposed, chairs were reupholstered, found pieces were refinished, and decorative elements were crafted by hand, giving the interior a layered and personal feel.

The kitchen, originally a darker 1980s unit, was refreshed using white adhesive foil and subtle lighting improvements that increased brightness and usability while preserving the original cabinetry.

The bathroom explores a more vibrant identity inspired by Mediterranean and North African color palettes. Existing yellow tiles were embraced rather than replaced and paired with deep blue walls and turquoise accents, creating a lively, almost spa-like atmosphere reminiscent of Moroccan baths.

In the entrance area, a hand-painted stencil technique was used to create a decorative wall surface resembling aged frescoes. The wardrobe was transformed with gold foil and new handles, introducing a playful, slightly baroque touch that contrasts with the otherwise simple interior.

Despite the very limited budget, the project demonstrates how creativity, color theory, and DIY techniques can turn a neglected rental apartment into a vibrant and personal living space.

The result is a home that feels expressive, warm, and full of character—proof that meaningful interior design does not necessarily require large investments, but rather imagination, resourcefulness, and a strong narrative.
